Grapes.

If you haven't seen Stephen Colbert's speech at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, it's worth a taste.

In a showdown of wits with the President, however, the results are in: President Bush and Bush impersonator Steve Bridges stole Saturday's show.

Going against zingers like this,

Real president: "I'm absolutely delighted to be here. As is Laura.
Fake president: "She's hot. Muy caliente."

Colbert had no chance.

Stephen Colbert's cutting satire fell flat because he ignored the cardinal rule of Washington humor: Make fun of yourself, not the other guy.

Fell flat? Are we kidding here? It was hilarious!

But the real majesty of Colbert's performance wasn't the jokes, but the fact that he had the BALLS to do it right in Bush's face. The fact that Bush was so shocked is only testament to how far away he sits from the truth.

RULES of Washington humor? Is this a President who often comes to terms with rules? An administration? Colbert did what almost no one else would do in the media...get up right in front of the world and speak his mind.

And it looks like 37,000 people agree with me. And counting.

The AP's first stab at it and pieces from Reuters and the Chicago Tribune tell us everything we need to know: Colbert's performance is sidestepped and marginalized while Bush is treated as light-hearted, humble, and funny. Expect nothing less from the cowardly American media.

If you are simply stating a personal preference that Bush's puppet (I'm sure he's happy with any situation when HE'S not the puppet) seemed funnier I can digest that...but to undermine what Colbert did, just by saying he wasn't as funny as our Presidents hired dupe...give me a break.

Colbert's was more than a comedy schtick. I hear people calling him an American hero. A hero?! You don't hear people on the street saying that about a body double.

Because if you think I found W the funnier of the two, I simply must right this wrong. I without doubt was being facetious.

I was hoping it was sarcasm. It looks like there is another WA Post column with a bit more of an even handed look...this one quotes all sides.
