RTID Fallout Day 3!

Submitted by grant on November 9, 2007 - 8:30am.

More fall out today... was it anti-tax or anti-road? That's the question. Erica Barnett Slog's yesterday that "pro-transit environmental voters who opposed Prop. 1 may have been decisive in its defeat" quoting exit polls taken by the Sierra Club. The commenter's on the Slog went to task on the Sierra Club's polling methods as the organization was crucial in killing RTID.

Here at BD, David comments that:

But what progressives need to worry about more, I think, is what looks like taxpayer fatigue that is more significant than we previously thought.

What's the truth? Well, like I said earlier in the week, the fact that there's even a question about what the results mean indicates that the "truth" will be decided by those that speak out now. After all, that's what politics in often about. Nuance never sells, just ask John Kerry. Skewed Sierra Club poll results? Who cares, honestly. We need to talk about it like it's the gospel truth. Why? Because, more often than not, conviction will overrule nuance. And that is what the battle is right now - the definition of the truth about the future mass transit in Western Washington, about what people are willing to pay for and what they think the solution is to traffic and mass transit in region.

I couldn't agree more with commenter "matthew fisher wilder" in Barnett's Slog entry when he says:

Well, anyway, Prop 1 didn't pass.

If this means more people will wake up and try to get more involved in making this happen -- meaning attending more public meetings and such -- then we might have a solution that's trimmer and would make people as happy.. The whole point of "FUCK YOU STRANGER. FUCK YOU SIERRA CLUB" is pretty pointless now.

Start talking with other people in town or start your own efforts to help get light rail into King County.

More Slog fun after the break

On a final note, this is what I worry most about the anti-RTID, pro-transit crowd (can I get a good nickname for them please?!) - a mindset that is the exact reverse of "matthew fisher wilder" and will doom expanding light rail in King County for a long time:

Elenchos says:
Yaaaawn!

I do so tire of this heavy lifting. Now that I've helped bury Prop 1, I shall retire from this rough-and-tumble of political fisticuffs and allow others to "carry the ball" (metaphorically) from here.

Yep. A job well done, if I say so myself. Wouldn't want to strain myself. All work and no play, and all that you know?

If you would like to come to me for advice in my new elder statesman role, you may find me holding court at Elaine's

(Yes, I am the commenter on that entry noted as "grznt")

If this is the mindset of the so-called "greens" that killed RTID, then we're all screwed. Green enough to vote down something, but too chicken shit to help solve the problem now. Let's see how much we can cut green house gases with greens like this in the forefront.

SLOG - Pro-Light Rail Enviros May Have Swung Prop. 1 Election

I hope all those anti-prop people from the environemntal side and from the right wing road side have some of those "better" solutions they were talking about up and ready to go - but I expect that really the so-called environmentalists will enjoy bringing Puget sound to standstill and the right wingers just cared about no new taxes and stopping ST.

so - where are all those great big ideas - the seattle times steps up with....toll roads and Danny Westneat steps up with...nothing.

bottom line: these people can't see past their noses and can't compromise on anything and they convinced enough voters to leave us all sitting in traffic without any rail alternative.
Go pat yourselves on your back you morons - every damn time you are stuck in traffic or can't get to the airport because ST wasn't extended far enough. Pat yourself in the back as you are stuck on 520 and I-90.

Just remember - light rail was defeated in Seattle in the 70's due to the argument by these same trogoldytes that - get this - it was too expensive and I-5 would NEVER be full. Now it is much more expensive than if we had just gotten it doen then and I-5 is a veritable parking lot.

Great job naysayers - you have real vision. Of course no alternative was ever sufggested by these same prognosticators - but they were back to badmouth ST and to take down prop. 1
