O'Connor Retires from SCOTUS: What You Can Do NOW!

Submitted by Benny G on July 1, 2005 - 8:04am.

Whatever happens with the Supreme Court nomination battle that is about to ensue, it's going to happen fast. Here are some things you can do right now:

I would love to see some ideas incubated here. Ideas on actions we can take as a community? Campaigns? Fundraising drives?

And not always just to myself. I feel like we should get together as a community and keep each other informed-- the Supreme Court feels sooooo removed from my life, you know? Like I could never possibly have an impact on who is nominated. But I bet that we can, if we work together.

There is power in numbers and while I think legally, anything fundraising might be difficult for BD, we can definitely get together to lobby our legislators, and the Senate Judiciary Committee, to appoint a sane person to the court.

Perhaps a floating party offering tasty cold beer donated by local brew pubs might just offer a wee bit of funds...you can also have some gambling fundraisers, auctions, benefit concerts (Grant probably pwnz a few musicians...), dinner clubs, etc etc.

Money is there to be had if you have a cause and a plan the community of your choice can get behind. Legally there are loopholes-a-plenty for raising those funds...perhaps a fundraiser to close fundraising loopholes?

That said...money is an obstacle that can be avoided if you model efforts around community involvement which require a whole different set of strategies.

Happy B-Day America...you flawed piece of shit you...

...I mean fundraising for other groups/candidates/politicians/initiatives. Just fyi.

The thing about BetterDonkey is that we don't have some awesome anonymous donor who funds all of this-- and by all of this I mean web hosting, domain names, costs associated with gaining & maintaining status as a legal organization, and the cost of putting on events... not to mention the hundreds of hours of volunteer time that go into making BetterDonkey work-- we just have ourselves and the generosity of our members.

As nice as it would be to not have to think about money at all, the reality is that none of this shit gets done without it. Up until now, outside of the very generous voluntary donations given by people who come to our events, we've been footing the bill for BetterDonkey ourselves. We are all sacrificing a lot for our dream.

In the coming months we will be starting some friendraising, fundraising, and materials-raising drives so that people who have the resources can partner with us in our efforts for positive progressive change. And how do I know all of this? Because I am working without pay this summer to make sure it all happens. :)
