SCOTUS CONTEST!!!

Submitted by BetterDonkey on July 5, 2005 - 10:14pm.

LAST CHANCE TO ENTER!!! BUSH ANNOUNCES COURT NOMINEE TONIGHT!!!

We're doing it! We're having a contest!

The dealee-o: George W. is hard at work waiting for Karl Rove to choose a Supreme Court nominee for him. We want YOU to take a stab at playing Bush's Brain.

One member who guesses correctly will be chosen at random to receive a free pitcher of her or his choice of beer at our next BetterDonkey happy hour!!! This is a contest you definitely want to enter.

Need a little help? The New York Times has a list of potential nominees here-- or just pull something out of your ass! It wouldn't be the first time.

Enter now!! And keep your eyes right here on this page, 'cause we're rollin' out a campaign that'll keep you up to your elbows in SCOTUS for a long time coming.

The rules: One entry per person. To enter, post your guess as a comment on this post, email your guess through the "Contact Us" page, OR respond to the forthcoming contest email. Entries received as a comment must be posted by registered users, and all entrants must use working email addresses, so that the winner may be contacted. Winner will be contacted via email as soon after the nomination as possible. *Must be 21 or over to win.

I think they're leading up to him.

I love the idea that Bush "spent his plane ride to Copenhagen reviewing personal documents on each nominee." Does that really sound like him? Don't we all know he was trying to figure out how the tray table worked, pinching the stewardess on the butt and demanding more nachos?!

Does anyone else think this is a great opportunity for Bush to get someone with Presidential aspirations out of the way for a more admired son? I would think he might use it to clear Sam Brownback or Elizabeth Dole out of the way, except both Kansas and North Carolina have Democratic Governors and he wouldn't want to add another "D" to the Senate.

I'm thinking we might see Bush pick Pataki or Giuliani for this post. I don't see Bush wanting to spend all of his political capital on this when he still has Social Security and the War hanging around his neck. If he picks a fight here and loses, there is no way for him to get his mojo back.

After reviewing the NY Times link above, I choose Emilo Garza. I like the cut of his jib. Not really.

It's off the beaten path, but in the spirit of choosing unbelievably conservative Hispanics I'm going with SeƱor Juan Ashcroft. The thought of him singing the decision statement overturning Roe v. Wade sets me all a'tingle.

Bush doesn't want to dodge a fight here. Luttig's nomination will appease the anti-choice lobby enough that they'll give Gonzalez a pass once Rehnquist steps down/keels over, as will likely happen five or ten minutes from... now.

Garza's the best of both worlds for Bush-- his nomination will allow George to pander to conservative Latinos, and avoid a fight with the ultra-right evangelicals who don't like that Gonzalez is not totally 100% anti-choice.

According to the Washington Post, Sportsbook.com has the odds as follows: Gonzales at 5-9; Garza at 7-1; Luttig and John G. Roberts at 15-1... Sportsbook.com Marketing Director Alex Czajkowski says they'll know who the nominee will be "If we see a huge wad of money coming from, say, D.C. or Texas..." If I were to guess, though, I'd watch for a sizable wager against Gonzalez from a bettor in Kennebunkport, 'cuz Daddy's running this show and Gonzo's gotta take a dive.
