Onward, Christian soldiers! Let's nuke the state department!

I’ve had it. I’ve had it with a well known Christian man who thinks he has the right to use his pulpit to make terrorist comments and not expect any repercussions. Today Pat Robertson has made another comment equally despicable as his “Nuke Foggy Bottom” comment back in 2003 in his call for the assassination of Hugo Chavez, the leader of Venezuela. How many more comments is this monster going to be allowed to say before anything is done besides someone chastising him? This man has given birth to the Eric Rudolphs of the world, the fringe right religious whackos. Is he protected because he is a good “Christian”? I thought making terrorist statements was a crime, but I guess that doesn’t apply if you are rich, white, and Christian. BTW, I’m not down on Christianity, I just don’t like people who make a profit off of it tax free like the whore of Babylon Robertson. I’d like to see him in a jail cell before someone actually takes him seriously and does something he suggests.

even though I'm a Jew (and therefore condemned to eternal hellfire), that this ain't exactly christian behavior. I mean it's one thing for godless ol' henry kissinger to say shit like this, but doesn't iot strike you as odd that our friends on the religious right are so far out there that it becomes ok to call for assasinations?

At some point demagogues like Roberston will have to pay a price.

Che,
Somewhat off-topic, but I'm not sure if you've been following what happened in Utah last weekend. I just posted up a 6 year-old interview that sheds some light about the kind of people who might be behind some of that crap.

Onward Christian soldiers, alright...

Have a good weekend.

Hugo Chavez is a very interesting world leader who manages to be both incredibly progressive and incredibly oppressive. If you haven't had a chance to see it, I highly recommend the documentary "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". When Chavez was removed from power in 2002, an Irish film crew was in Venezuela working on a documentary on him. Part of that crew was trapped in the Presidential palace, holed up with the remainder of Chavez's government. Part of that crew was out on the streets of Caracas. What they show is a media coup that went all the way to Ari Fleischer (that smarmy asshole) and a legion of people who are determined to have their democracy survive. For Pat Robertson to make this call does a disservice to the people of Venezuela who elected Chavez and who have kept him in power through referenda and other elections. The outside world doesn't get to have a say in who our leader is and unless they are committing crimes against humanity, we shouldn't get to have a say in who a foreign country elects as their leader. Shame on you Pat Robertson for claiming to celebrate America and it's values. This is not an American value and this is not a democratic value.

Venezuela wants to extradite Robertson? Are you kidding me? And can they hurry?

I don't know if Robertson really deserves to be extradited for shooting his mouth off, but maybe this will make him think twice next time.

Did anyone notice the "Related to story" headlines "Does Chavez Hate U.S.?" (Click here and scroll down just a little to the links below the picture of Robertson.) I'd be curious to know what anyone else has to say about that video segment. It talks a lot about how Chavez says negative things about the US and how he wants to unify South (Latin?) America as one country in opposition to the US, but doesn't mention that he was democratically elected. I have to admit that I don't know much about Chavez or Venezuela but maybe some of you do and would like to share? I'm curious to know what in this clip is accurate or inaccurate, and what was left out.

On a sidenote, check out this wonderful letter-to-the-editor in the Seattle Times today (the fifth letter on the page). Apparently this guy thinks we should be an empire just like the Roman Empire, invading surrounding lands and killing off all the people ("barbarians") who oppose us. Gee, that sounds like a great undertaking and a wonderful use of our tax dollars and military power. Never mind that we live in a very, very different world than in the era of the Roman Empire and maybe, just maybe, that wouldn't be the wisest (or most useful) move.
