Majority of Americans Ready to Impeach Bush

Submitted by chrisz on January 18, 2006 - 11:49am.

A new Zogby poll released yesterday found that 52% of Americans want Congress to impeach President Bush if he wiretapped American citizens without a judge's approval Fourty-Three percent did not want the president impeached.

According to the guy who commisioned the poll, Bob Fertik co-found of AfterDowningStreet.org, "The American people are not buying Bush's outrageous claim that he has the power to wiretap American citizens without a warrant. Americans believe terrorism can be fought without turning our own government into Big Brother"

Lets hope he's right.

So, what is happening with this? If anyone has heard this is a possibility could you say so. This seems like at least the third or fourth impeachable offense that has become widely known (and probably the most egregious) but I'm just waiting to see a little fight from the left to actually stop this guy, not just slow him down. Anyone know how he could be impeached? Even with the Republicans in control it must be possible, right?

insight magazine, a conservative rag, says the following:

The Bush administration is bracing for impeachment hearings in Congress.

"A coalition in Congress is being formed to support impeachment," an administration source said.

Sources said a prelude to the impeachment process could begin with hearings by the Senate Judiciary Committee in February. They said the hearings would focus on the secret electronic surveillance program and whether Mr. Bush violated the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act...

Impeachment proponents in Congress have been bolstered by a memorandum by the Congressional Research Service on Jan. 6. CRS, which is the research arm of Congress, asserted in a report by national security specialist Alfred Cumming that the amended 1947 law requires the president to keep all members of the House and Senate intelligence committees "fully and currently informed" of a domestic surveillance effort. It was the second CRS report in less than a month that questioned the administration's domestic surveillance program.

Take what you will from it... I'm not sure this'll happen unless Dem's take both houses in '06. Even then, unless there is some serious change in public opinion, I'd see the American people thinking it was payback and a low blow if the Dems won both houses and then targeted Bush.

But, you can always dream.

That's interesting-- I remember hearing maybe a month ago a bunch of Republican analysts saying, "Oh no, impeachment, not a threat, ridiculous, could never happen."

Which is how you know they're scared that the impeachment is coming, you know?

So it's interesting to see Insight bringing impeachment out into the open.
