It begins...

So, this isn't exactly local. We are lucky enough to live in a state that would still allow abortion even if Roe was struck down. But it still worries me, for the sake of all the other women (and men) that this could affect...

Courtesy of Alternet's blog Peek, United Press International reports that today, only one day after Alito was confirmed, five states are considering across-the-board bans on abortion, except when a woman's life is in danger. Indiana, Ohio, Georgia, South Dakota, and Tennessee.

I don't know what sort of chances these bans have of actually passing. The Director of Americans United for Life has even said that he anticipates the bans will be struck down in the lower court. But I know I will be paying close attention to see where this goes.

Scary stuff. Roe has a decent bit of precedent built up, but of course that won't stop the "new" court. It's time for pro-choicers to go on the offensive with a campaign against abortion- hopefully splitting the pro-life base in the process.

You bet this is local. It's so local that it's right inside my uterus, right now.

"Life in danger" is such a subjective thing. I think you can argue that the life of any teenage girl forced to give birth to a child she doesn't want is in danger; the life of any abused woman forced to give birth to a child she can't keep safe is in danger; the life of any woman who knows in her heart that it's wrong for her to give birth to a child but is forced to do so, is in danger.

And the life of any unwanted child given up for adooption is in danger unless someone is paying for prenatal care, good nutrition for the mother, and a safe home. Bush gave lip service to "support for adoption" in the State of the Union, but until that mandate gets funded-- and not just through religious organizations-- we'd better not see any of these abortion bans become law.
