Fight the Edumacation Supermajority!

The Supermajority blows Super-majorly!
Perhaps state Rep. Schual-Berke said it best: "We should end the tyranny of the minority, stop thwarting the will of the majority, and victimizing our children. Let's pass school levies with a simple majority vote. It's fair; it's simple."

So what can YOU do about it?

  1. Sign the Betterdonkey.org letter to the editor. You can read it here. (To sign it just add your name to the comments-- we'll take care of the rest.)
  2. Email your state legislator. Find your state legislator here. It is very important to write to your state Senator first, as the Senate is currently debating ending the supermajority. Tell them the legislature should pass Senate Bill 5144 and SJR 8202 and make sure they know that your support and future vote will depend on how they address this issue.
  3. Write your own letter to the editor! Write to any of the papers below and let them know you hate the supermajority. The more the supermajority is spotlighted, the more people will learn about how anti-democratic and idiotic it is! It’s easy… write one letter and then send it to everyone.

The paramount responsibility of the government of the State of Washington is the funding and operation of K-12 education…but the way the legislators and governors of this state have acted for decades, you’d never know it.

The supermajority, which requires 60% of the public to approve school levies, is one of the largest obstacles against building a 21st century education system in this state. This anti-democratic statute:

  1. Strangles local school districts and their ability to properly fund school programs and build up-to-date and safe school facilities.
  2. Is a waste of tax payer and school district money, as it requires school districts to run costly election campaigns multiple times.
  3. Puts the children of Washington at a competitive disadvantage to children in other states, and across the globe.

If we can elect a president who loses the popular vote and build a stadium that a majority of voters rejected, then we can approve school levies and bonds that get 50% of the vote. All we ask is for education levies and bonds to be treated like politicians and initiatives. We will accept nothing less.

Somebody once said, “The children are our future”. We think it was Principal Skinner. Well, if he was right, then maybe we should start funding that future.

Update: This piece of legislation failed to pass in the Senate (25 to 23) on March 16, 2005.
